PAREA Founder discusses mental health challenges and policy opportunities on TVP World
Recently, PAREA’s Founder was interviewed by TVP World, discussing the challenges and policy opportunities in mental health. The interview highlighted the need to move beyond a purely biomedical approach, emphasizing that mental health issues differ fundamentally from typical physical diseases.
The conversation underscored the importance of understanding mental health in a broader context, which encompasses societal factors such as loneliness, disconnection, and the trajectories of individual lives. It was noted that creating environments that foster well-being is essential.
Additionally, the discussion addressed the need for a comprehensive approach to support individuals already affected by mental health issues, ensuring they have access to a range of choices, including both medical and psychological treatments.
A critical focus was placed on the importance of reintegration, advocating for recovery that is rooted in community-based services and support structures.
The interview also touched upon the alarming trends in youth mental health. In Europe, suicide ranks among the leading causes of death for teenagers, often being the second or third leading cause for those aged 15-24. With 75% of mental health conditions beginning before the brain fully matures, it is clear that mental health conditions predominantly affect the young.
While there are positive developments occurring within the European Union, the need for further action remains significant.
